What led you to become a Lifestyle Lead in a care home?
During COVID you were required to change your career path. I was informed by another colleague about the position becoming available. I replied that I could see myself doing that. This prompted me to apply for the position to which I was successful.
How long have you been working at your PCH home?
I will have been at Parkland House for 5 years this November.
What’s the most popular activity in the home right now?
Our most popular activity right now is cooking club, bingo, arts & crafts and our weekly music quiz of guess the record.
Can you share a story where an activity had a big impact on residents’ wellbeing?
We have a gentleman who really engages in guessing the record activity. Knowing this resident will participate in 1 activity a week brings immense joy to see him interacting with others.
What creative skills do you use most in your role?
Being able to bring my skills from past roles such as being a green coat at a holiday camp, undertaking a hairdressing course, to having my own creative page where I have been able to bring my crafting skills to this role.
How do you encourage residents who are shy or reluctant to join activities?
Lots of encouragement or complete a 1:1 activity session with them of their choosing. By building relationships with residents to build up their confidence to join in group sessions. Understanding their likes and dislikes, and previous hobbies.
If you could organise any local trip for residents, where would you choose and why?
The local garden centre, as this always goes down well with our residents. They have such a variety of local trips including the local donkey sanctuary. Exeter Cathedral was well received by residents.
Why do you think activities are such an important part of life in a care home?
Activities help to keep residents stimulated. Supporting their wellbeing and maintaining skills they could have potentially been doing before coming into a care home, such as gardening and cooking. Activities bring enjoyment to our residents.
What’s your favourite moment with residents during an activity?
When you see a resident who will not normally engage with an activity, they suddenly join in and you see them light up and have fun through interacting, and building friendships with other residents.
