Meet Our Team: Sandra, Senior Care Assistant at Cornerways ✨

We’re delighted to introduce the next feature in our Meet Our Team series — Sandra, one of our dedicated Senior Care Assistants at Cornerways.

We caught up with Sandra to learn more about her journey in care, what inspires her, and the moments that make her proud to be part of our team. 💚

How did you start your career in care, and what inspired you to become a Care Assistant?

I would say my journey as a caregiver started from a place of compassion and empathy for my great aunt who was being cared for by my parents. She was childless and blind as the same time. My parents took it upon themselves took care of her and passed it down to us. I was personally trained by my mother on how to care for my aunt. I cared for her till her last days on earth, when she was aged over 100. From then onwards, every child, and every adult who has any form of disability felt like my aunt, so I carried that with me.

How long have you worked in care, and at your PCH home?

I started working in care from 2016, in 2021 I took professional study for one year as a Certified Nursing Assistant while working with children with learning disabilities till 2023. In June that same year I was recruited by Devon Alliance in United Arab Emirates Abu Dhabi. I started working with Peninsula care homes in June 2023 as a care assistant and then was promoted to senior care assistant.

What do you love most about supporting residents in your role?

What I love most is the relationships I forge with each of the residents, that's what brings me the most joy. It is incredibly satisfying to be able to brighten someone's day by bringing joy, comfort, and dignity. It's the little things, like laughing together, singing together or just being there, that make it special.

Can you share a heart warming story or proud moment you’ve had while caring for residents?

That was when I came in for my shift one night and I was told by my colleagues told me that one of our residents specifically called my name, asking for me, and the moment she saw me she called out my name. It was a proud moment. It brought to mind the fact that the care and consistency we provide truly have an impact on their lives.

What personal qualities or skills do you think make someone a great Care Assistant?

I would say that for someone to truly be a good care assistant, the person must be a person that has these few qualities; Patience, empathy, and genuine compassion. A good assistant listens without judging, maintains composure under pressure, and always prioritizes the well-being of the resident. Having a positive attitude and being dependable are also important.

How does your team support each other and make the workplace feel like family?

Like a family, we are meant to look out for one another. There should be a strong sense of unity and trust in our team, whether it is stepping in to assist during a busy shift or checking in on one another after a difficult day.

I especially enjoy working with residents on arts and crafts or music lessons. It is a time when their individuality truly shines through, and we all laugh and brainstorm together. Everyone involved benefits from these uplifting instances.

What advice would you give someone who’s considering starting a career in social care?

Put yourself out there with an open mind and an eagerness to learn. Despite the difficulties, the emotional benefits are well worth the effort. You’ll grow in ways you never expected, and you’ll have a real impact on people’s live

Why would you recommend working at this home over others?

The fact that the culture, and value here is truly resident-centered makes a big difference. The team feels like a second family, the management is supportive, and there is a genuine commitment to providing high-quality care.

How has this role helped you grow, and where do you see yourself progressing in the future?

This role has helped me become more confident, resilient, and compassionate.  It has shown me how important communication and working in a team are. I want to keep improving my skills and possibly train to become a manager in care or even a nurse in the future. I am pleased that I have progressed from care assistant to senior care assistant whilst at Cornerways.

Every day, our team makes a difference — just like Sandra.  Cornerways is a busy home with lots of activities, local trips and lots of fun and laughter.   If you’d like to be part of a supportive, rewarding environment, join our care team today Peninsula Care Homes jobs and careers | Indeed.com 💚
